Narayanganj Palliative Care, Bangladesh
About the project
This project has now come to an end. It aimed to strengthen the voice of direct palliative care stakeholders and increase their impact as advocates to improve access to quality palliative care worldwide. Palliative care direct stakeholders are people who are currently living with conditions that require palliative care now or may require it in the future and those who are in older age and approaching the end of the life cycle.
The project will develop a model of age–attuned, integrated, supportive palliative care in Narayanganj that is inclusive, accessible and sensitive to local needs. The project combines a community-based approach together with working with the primary health care provider at the Bandar Upazila Health Complex. We aim to strengthen the primary health care offered at the Upazila Health Complex by grafting on palliative care skills training and services. This will contribute to the care offered at the complex including for non-communicable diseases (NCD), mental health and disability care. We will also work with key stakeholders to draft a national palliative care plan and present this to the Ministry of Health, and advocate for a national budget allocation for palliative care.
We believe that the voice of direct stakeholders is critical to increasing the impact of palliative care advocacy so better care is available to more people who need it. At the same time, in many settings direct stakeholders have not being given the opportunities to speak out and participate in all stages of palliative care advocacy activities. We are trying to find some new ways to address this.
